Reflections on The Prophet’s Life
For the whole month of Rabi’ul Awwal, we will be sharing with you Reflections on The Prophet's Life, which are excerpts from the book “In the Footsteps of the Prophet” by Tariq Ramadan. In this book, we find examples of the Prophet’s life that reinforce the critical values that form the foundation of our Singaporean Muslim Identity (SMI). These values call upon us to be religiously resilient, inclusive,
contributive, adaptive and progressive. These are values which will guide us to become the Prophet’s ummah that serves as a model community.
To Be Inclusive
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) came to humankind with a message of faith, ethics, and hope, in which Allah SWT reminds all people of His presence, His requirements, and the final Day of Return and Encounter. Though the Prophet (PBUH) came with this message, throughout his life he kept listening to women, children, men, slaves, rich, and poor, as well as outcasts. He listened to, welcomed, and comforted them.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) kept distinguishing between situations and the people involved in them, and he showed the utmost respect toward individuals and their beliefs. For many years, a young Jew was his companion and followed him everywhere, for he loved the Prophet’s company. The Prophet (PBUH) never asked him to abandon his faith. Eventually the boy fell seriously ill, and on his deathbed he asked his father to allow him to embrace Islam, but during all his time by the
Prophet’s side, he had remained what he was and enjoyed the Prophet’s love and regard.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was indeed an ultimate role model of equity toward those who did not share his faith. Once a funeral procession passed by the Prophet (PBUH) in Madinah, he stood up to show his respect for the deceased. When he was informed that this was a Jew’s funeral, the Prophet responded, “Was this not a human soul?” [ Sunan an-Nasa'i]
Peaceful Co-existence
Peaceful co-existence is one of the key fundamentals in ensuring religious stability and harmonious living. It is indeed one of the most important teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The endeavour for harmony has been expounded clearly throughout the Prophet’s life. Appreciating differences and solidifying inter-faith relationships are among the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He had always retained very strong ties with the members of different clans and those who had
not accepted Islam.
It was a similar attitude of trust that had made it possible for Muslims to emigrate to Abyssinia (present day Ethiopia), under protection of a king whom the Prophet (PBUH) trusted even though he was not a Muslim. Abyssinia was ruled by a Christian King, known as The Negus or Najashi. Negus was trusted by the Prophet as a just ruler and he was confident that the Muslims will be treated justly and kindly in the Abyssinia.
This attitude is to be found throughout the Prophet’s life: he established his relationships in the name of trust and the respect of principles, and not exclusively on the basis of similar religious affiliation. His Companions had understood this as well, and they did not hesitate to develop solid ties with non-Muslims in the name of kinship or friendship, on the basis of mutual respect and trust, even in perilous situations.
The ‘Charter of Medina’ ( Sahifah Madinah) on the other hand demonstrates how the Prophet had accord recognition of diverse affliations and did not demand any conversion. The Document clearly highlights “the principles of justice, equality, and equal dignity for all the signatories, whether Jewish or Muslim, Medina natives or immigrants from Mecca, Aws, or Khazraj.”
Lessons from the Prophet’s life have outlined ways for us to live and thrive in a plural society. The Prophet (PBUH) had taught us the concept of knowing one other ( ta’aruf), co-existence ( ta’ayush) and co-operation (ta’awun).
..........
Stay tuned for Part 3 in next week's newsletter, where we will be talking about the importance of contributing and giving back to society. We hope that what we've shared this week is beneficial and inspires you to become a better Muslim. May Allah guide us all, make our hearts dedicated solely to Him, and make us steadfast on our Deen. Ameen.

Still I Rise: Phenomenal Women
A woman is a powerhouse of strength and a reservoir of dignity. She was not created lightly, neither was she given life in vain. Her aura is akin to that strong ancient tree that everyone clings to for life and love. A tree with roots deep within the earth, yet branches far above the sky. Branches that support, nourish, and shelter everyone that they come in contact with - those who nest in permanently, and also those who fly away after brief rest. But the
real strength of those branches lies in her deep and nurtured, yet unseen, roots - the faith in her heart, and the submission of her soul to her Only Creator and Sustainer. If she recognises this fact, she connects to the Source of All Strength and will never wither away, come storm or hail. And if she fails to see it, alas she lets go of her ethereal Divinely-gifted potential and sways to every gust of wind that seeks to imbalance her.
In this talk, we will look at the life of those awe-inspiring women of the past who chose to leave behind every cliché and label, who let go of selfish base desires that weaken them, who fought every thief seeking to loot their real identity - servant of the Most Loving, Most Gentle God. We will study about those women who chose to connect their roots to the Ever Living, the Source of love, the Source of patience; and in that process became the towering perennial trees whose shade
we rest in even today.
Come, be inspired. Come, be enlightened.
Come... find your roots.

Islamic Funeral And Death Rites Course
Death is a very painful and emotional time, yet one that may be filled with hope and mercy. Muslims believe that death is a departure from the life of this world, but not the end of a person's existence. Rather, eternal life is to come, and we pray for Allah's mercy to be with the departed, in hopes that they may find peace and happiness in the next to come.
That is for the person who will face death. But how about the family or relatives? Its very easy to say stay calm and be strong but without the proper knowledge and guidance many a times that will not be the case. In some incidences, members of family breaks down and make irrational decisions which may cause more problems.
If this situation arises in your family, would you know what to do?

INFAQ: Infaq Mutton ( All year round )
Mission: To support mosques and muslim organisations by providing halal mutton for their events / majlis.
Throughout the year we have had requests from various organisations for sponsorship of mutton and often we have to reject them because we could raise funds only during certain periods like Ramadan, or when we have Aqiqah Australia projects where we could bring in the mutton from Australia.
To make this effort more sustainable and for us to be able to respond to requests, we have decided to run this project all year around.
This would also provide avenues for the community to continue supporting various events throughout the year. For Infaq Mutton ( All Year Round ), we will only raise funds for frozen mutton, as it is much easier to acquire and cheaper to purchase compared to fresh mutton.
So far the total amount of mutton we have collected is 385kg, of which:
- 30kg was donated to Masjid Wak Tanjong
- 50kg was donated to Masjid Darul Makmur
- 100kg was donated to Masjid Ar-Rabitah
- 30kg was donated to Masjid Mydin
- most recently 80kg was donated to Masjid Darul Makmur
Current Mutton Request:
- No request. We are now left with 35kg of mutton. If you are an event organiser for a non-profit organisation and would like to request for the meat, do write in to us at info@islamicevents.sg and we will do our best to help :)

From their inception till date, they are close to providing 200,000 meals to the Community.

Quran Reading @ Home
Are you looking for a Quran Teacher to educate you and your family on reading and reciting the Quran at Home? In collaboration with Islamicevents.sg and Meqar, we hope we can help you match a suitable Quran Teacher for you and your family.
--------------------
Who is Meqar?
--------------------
MEQAR is a department under Mujahidin Mosque which focuses on Quran Education and training of Quran Teachers on the Qiraati methodology. They have trained more than 500 Quran teachers using the Qiraati methodology. In this collaboration, Meqar will advise Islamicevents.sg on suitable Quran Teachers that are ready to be matched.
------------------------------------------------------------
How do we match you with the Quran Teacher?
------------------------------------------------------------
- Location: We recognise that location plays an important role. We would not want to match a family and a teacher who lives on the other end of Singapore. We will match best by locating the Quran Teacher that is closest to you.
- Experience: Teaching children and teaching adults can be very different. Some of our Quran Teachers are well trained in handling children than adults and they prefer to teach children. Vice versa, you would want a Quran Teacher to be able to handle kids or children.
- Knowledge: You may prefer to have a more knowledgable Quran Teacher as you may only want to improve on Tajweed or embarking on Sanads. Some Quran Teachers can teach until a certain level. If you advance further, you may need to have another teacher to teach advance reading methodology.
