[Newsletter] Part 4 - Reflections on The Prophet's Life

Published: Mon, 12/11/17

Assalamualaikum Wr Wb,

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Thank you for subscribing to our mailing list. InshaAllah this email finds you and your family in the best of health and imaan. May the peace and blessings of Allah SWT be upon you and your family, inshaAllah.

Reflections on The Prophet’s Life
For the whole month of Rabi’ul Awwal, we will be sharing with you Reflections on The Prophet's Life, which are excerpts from the book “In the Footsteps of the Prophet” by Tariq Ramadan. In this book, we find examples of the Prophet’s life that reinforce the critical values that form the foundation of our Singaporean Muslim Identity (SMI). These values call upon us to be religiously resilient, inclusive, contributive, adaptive and progressive. These are values which will guide us to become the Prophet’s ummah that serves as a model community.

To Be Adaptive
In this week's newsletter, we will be discussing the importance of being adaptive in a new environment. The Prophet (PBUH) and all his Companions had to leave Mecca because of persecutions and adversity from their own brothers and sisters within their respective clans. The situation had become unbearable: women and men had died, others had been tortured, and the Quraysh had finally decided to set upon the Prophet himself and get rid of him.

The emigration is first of all the objective reality of believing women and men who were not free to practice their faith and who decided to make a clean break for the sake of their beliefs. Allah SWT says in the Qur'an: "Say, 'O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.'" [Qur'an 39:10]

Thus they decided to leave their homeland, to break with their universe and habits, and to experience exile, all for the sake of their faith. Exile is, then, another trial of trust. All prophets have intensively experienced this trial of the heart, as all believers have after them. How far are they prepared to go, how much are they prepared to give of themselves and of their lives, for the One, His truth and His love? Those are the eternal questions of faith, which accompany every temporal and historical experience of the believing conscience. Hijrah was one of the Muslim community’s answers at the dawn of its existence.

In effect, exile was also to require that the first Muslims learn to remain faithful to the meaning of Islam’s teachings in spite of the change of place, culture, and memory. Medina meant new customs, new types of social relationships, a wholly different role for women (who were socially far more present than in Mecca), and more complex intertribal relations, as well as the influential presence of the Jewish and Christian communities, which was something new to Muslims.

Very early on, the community of faith, following the Prophet’s example, had to distinguish between what belonged to Islamic principles and what was more particularly related to Meccan culture. They were to remain faithful to the first while learning to adopt a flexible and critical approach to their original culture. They even had to try to reform some of their attitudes, which were more cultural than Islamic. This was a difficult experience for them, for they might have been tempted to think that their habits and customs were in themselves Islamic. Hijrah was to reveal that this was not the case and that one must question every single cultural practice, both to be faithful to Islamic principles and to open up to other cultures and gain from their wealth.

For instance, having learned that a wedding was to take place among the Medina Muslims (the Ansar), the Prophet (PBUH) had two singing maids sent to them, for, he said, the Ansar enjoyed singing. [Hadith reported by Ibn Majah] Not only did he thereby recognise a cultural feature or taste that was not in itself opposed to Islamic principles, but he integrated it as an enrichment of his own human experience.

Hijrah was also, then, a trial of intelligence, spurring the need to distinguish between principles and their cultural manifestations; moreover, it implied opening up and confidently welcoming new customs, new ways of being and thinking, new tastes. Thus, the universality of principles merged with the necessity of recognising the diversity of ways of life and cultures. Exile was the most immediate and profound experience of this, since it implied uprooting oneself while remaining faithful to the same God, to the same meaning, in different environments.

..........

Stay tuned for Part 5 in next week's newsletter, where we will be talking about the importance of being progressive. We hope that what we've shared this week is beneficial and inspires you to become a better Muslim. May Allah guide us all, make our hearts dedicated solely to Him, and make us steadfast on our Deen. Ameen.

Still I Rise: Phenomenal Women

A woman is a powerhouse of strength and a reservoir of dignity. She was not created lightly, neither was she given life in vain. Her aura is akin to that strong ancient tree that everyone clings to for life and love. A tree with roots deep within the earth, yet branches far above the sky. Branches that support, nourish, and shelter everyone that they come in contact with - those who nest in permanently, and also those who fly away after brief rest. But the real strength of those branches lies in her deep and nurtured, yet unseen, roots - the faith in her heart, and the submission of her soul to her Only Creator and Sustainer. If she recognises this fact, she connects to the Source of All Strength and will never wither away, come storm or hail. And if she fails to see it, alas she lets go of her ethereal Divinely-gifted potential and sways to every gust of wind that seeks to imbalance her.

In this talk, we will look at the life of those awe-inspiring women of the past who chose to leave behind every cliché and label, who let go of selfish base desires that weaken them, who fought every thief seeking to loot their real identity - servant of the Most Loving, Most Gentle God. We will study about those women who chose to connect their roots to the Ever Living, the Source of love, the Source of patience; and in that process became the towering perennial trees whose shade we rest in even today.

Come, be inspired. Come, be enlightened.

Come... find your roots.

Love & Pray Conference

It is eminent that in everyone's life, we will face challenges and difficulties. We often struggle with finding ways to deal with it. Love & Pray is a platform where we help to provide analysis, understanding the right concept and applying it in the best way possible. Love & Pray provides powerful tools to help anyone going through trials and tribulation in life that could cause sadness, depression and losing hope.

This event will bring together the speakers from UK and Algeria to teach and discuss how we can overcome our challenges with positivism and holding on to our faith.

The event will cover several topics about love that is, love for the world, love for human beings, love of God and love of nature and environment. The speaker will be covering this topics and angle them in a way to assist deep thought, reflection, contemplation and most importantly to take positive action moving forward. In this event we will encourage the understanding of being grateful for our lives and to appreciate the gifts that are given to us. In this we hope that even when we are surrounded by difficulties, we view all of it as a blessing to help us grow and become wiser, and a better individual. This we hope will be elaborate through the theme of Love & Pray.

INFAQ: Infaq Mutton ( All year round )

Mission: To support mosques and muslim organisations by providing halal mutton for their events / majlis.

Throughout the year we have had requests from various organisations for sponsorship of mutton and often we have to reject them because we could raise funds only during certain periods like Ramadan, or when we have Aqiqah Australia projects where we could bring in the mutton from Australia.

To make this effort more sustainable and for us to be able to respond to requests, we have decided to run this project all year around.

This would also provide avenues for the community to continue supporting various events throughout the year. For Infaq Mutton ( All Year Round ), we will only raise funds for frozen mutton, as it is much easier to acquire and cheaper to purchase compared to fresh mutton.

So far the total amount of mutton we have collected is 385kg, of which:
- 30kg was donated to Masjid Wak Tanjong
- 50kg was donated to Masjid Darul Makmur
- 100kg was donated to Masjid Ar-Rabitah
- 30kg was donated to Masjid Mydin
- 80kg was donated to Masjid Darul Makmur
- most recently 100kg was donated to Masjid Maarof

Current Mutton Request:

  • No request. We are now left with 207kg of mutton. If you are an event organiser for a non-profit organisation and would like to request for the meat, do write in to us at info@islamicevents.sg and we will do our best to help :)

Quran Reading @ Home

Are you looking for a Quran Teacher to educate you and your family on reading and reciting the Quran at Home? In collaboration with Islamicevents.sg and Meqar, we hope we can help you match a suitable Quran Teacher for you and your family.

--------------------
Who is Meqar?
--------------------

MEQAR is a department under Mujahidin Mosque which focuses on Quran Education and training of Quran Teachers on the Qiraati methodology. They have trained more than 500 Quran teachers using the Qiraati methodology. In this collaboration, Meqar will advise Islamicevents.sg on suitable Quran Teachers that are ready to be matched.

------------------------------------------------------------
How do we match you with the Quran Teacher?
------------------------------------------------------------

- Location: We recognise that location plays an important role. We would not want to match a family and a teacher who lives on the other end of Singapore. We will match best by locating the Quran Teacher that is closest to you.

- Experience: Teaching children and teaching adults can be very different. Some of our Quran Teachers are well trained in handling children than adults and they prefer to teach children. Vice versa, you would want a Quran Teacher to be able to handle kids or children.

- Knowledge: You may prefer to have a more knowledgable Quran Teacher as you may only want to improve on Tajweed or embarking on Sanads. Some Quran Teachers can teach until a certain level. If you advance further, you may need to have another teacher to teach advance reading methodology.

One to One Al Quran Reading

The One to One Al Quran Reading is suitable for busy individuals that have to travel frequently for work or Business or work shifts.

*Only available at Nadi Furqan Centres at
