Halal Sustenance
Islam is a way of life which encompasses every aspect in a Muslim's daily conduct. It provides us with guidance on acts of worship to everyday dealings or muamalat. Today's topic serves as a basic introduction to the concept of savings that conforms to the Shariah (Islamic law). By conducting oneself in compliance with the Shariah, it brings one closer to protecting the 5 elements in order to achieve the Maqasid Shariah.

In ensuring that our savings are halal, we are required to firstly understand the basic principles of halal money. The term halal, which means lawful or permissible, applies not only to food and drinks but also to the source of our income. In fact, Islam views the acquisition of halal income as one of the most important aspect of religion. If income is obtained through unacceptable ways, for example as interest earned or stealing, then spending it is considered unlawful as well.

Introduction to the Concepts of Islamic Finance
The principles of halal money are strongly related to the concepts of Islamic finance. Before we embark upon the guideline on savings, concepts of Islamic finance need to be appreciated.

The financial systems in general play an important function in allocation of resources where funds are mobilised from savers/households and allocated for productive or investment purposes. In an Islamic financial system, this is done in accordance to the principles of Shariah. Additionally, it is value oriented as other than making profits, it is equally important to achieve socio-economic justice and promote social welfare.

The basic pillars of Islamic finance are as follows:

(i) The main source of reference is Shariah (Islamic law). As such, Islamic financial contracts and its principles such as mudharabah (profit-sharing) and murabahah (cost-plus / profit) are derived from the Quran, Hadith and other Shariah sources.

(ii)  Prohibition of riba (interest). Allah SWT has mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah [2:275]: "...Allah has permitted trade and forbidden usury" and in another verse [2:278]: "O you who believe: Fear God and give up what remains of your demand for usury if you are indeed believers." Generally, riba is prohibited due to its destructive element that can cause injustice to society.

(iii) Prohibition of gharar (uncertainty). Gharar is described as a risky or hazardous sale, where details concerning the sale item are unknown or uncertain. Allah SWT has mentioned in Surah An-Nisa' [4:29]: "O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent." This shows that uncertainty is one of the elements that can cause injustice. Hence, uncertainty is prohibited in any transactions.

(iv) Prohibition of maysir (gambling). Gambling is a form of excessive uncertainty and speculation. The winner is solely determined by mere chance and takes others' property unjustly. Maysir is prohibited in the Quran, in Surah Al-Maidah [5:90]: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters to other than Allah and the divining of the future are but a loathsome evil of Satan's doing; shun it, then, so that you may be successful."

(v) Prohibition of non-permissible items. Items that are considered illegal under the Shariah cannot be the subject matter of trading, as it would render the whole transaction invalid. As mentioned in the following Hadith: "Surely, Allah and His Messenger have prohibited the sale of wine, the flesh of dead animals, swine and idols." [Bukhari & Muslim]

The income earned from such prohibited items is also considered sinful as highlighted in the following Hadith: "When Allah prohibits a thing, He prohibits giving and receiving the price of it as well." [Ahmad & Abu Daud]

Kursus Jenazah (Jan 2018)

NEW INFAQ PROJECT:

INFAQ: Wakf Housing Project in Cambodia

Mission: To aid and provide poor families in Cambodia with proper housing.

While we are living in the comfort of our homes protected from the weather, others in different parts of the world may not share the same fate. Despite working day and night to support their families, they are still too poor to purchase land and build up their own houses. There are thousands of families living in poverty in Cambodia, and some of the houses are simply made of straw (as shown above). In this Wakf project, we aim to aid and provide these families with proper housing.

This project, managed by Infaq.SG, will help to purchase a small piece of land and build up the houses for these poor families. One of our staff members, who travels every 2-3 months to Cambodia to send support, will be overseeing this project.

Current Request: 10 houses
Location: 1 House @ Wilayah Koh Kong & 9 Houses @ Wilayah Sihanoukville
Completion period: 2 months + 1 month of Administration.

Wakaf Whole House - SGD $3,600
Wakaf Part of House ( Shared with 6 pax ) - SGD $630 each.

INFAQ: Infaq Mutton (All Year Round)

Mission: To support mosques and muslim organisations by providing halal mutton for their events / majlis.

Throughout the year we have had requests from various organisations for sponsorship of mutton and often we have to reject them because we could raise funds only during certain periods like Ramadan, or when we have Aqiqah Australia projects where we could bring in the mutton from Australia.

To make this effort more sustainable and for us to be able to respond to requests, we have decided to run this project all year around.

This would also provide avenues for the community to continue supporting various events throughout the year. For Infaq Mutton ( All Year Round ), we will only raise funds for frozen mutton, as it is much easier to acquire and cheaper to purchase compared to fresh mutton.

So far the total amount of mutton we have collected is 717kg, of which:
- 30kg was donated to Masjid Wak Tanjong
- 50kg was donated to Masjid Darul Makmur
- 100kg was donated to Masjid Ar-Rabitah
- 30kg was donated to Masjid Mydin
- 80kg was donated to Masjid Darul Makmur
- 100kg was donated to Masjid Maarof
- 100kg was donated to Masjid Darul Makmur
- 136kg was donated to Masjid Mujahidin
- most recently 80kg was donated to Masjid Darul Makmur

Current Mutton Request:

  • No request. We are now left with 11kg of mutton. If you are an event organiser for a non-profit organisation and would like to request for the meat, do write in to us at info@islamicevents.sg and we will do our best to help :)

Quran Reading @ Home

Are you looking for a Quran Teacher to educate you and your family on reading and reciting the Quran at Home? In collaboration with Islamicevents.sg and Meqar, we hope we can help you match a suitable Quran Teacher for you and your family.

--------------------
Who is Meqar?
--------------------

MEQAR is a department under Mujahidin Mosque which focuses on Quran Education and training of Quran Teachers on the Qiraati methodology. They have trained more than 500 Quran teachers using the Qiraati methodology. In this collaboration, Meqar will advise Islamicevents.sg on suitable Quran Teachers that are ready to be matched.

------------------------------------------------------------
How do we match you with the Quran Teacher?
------------------------------------------------------------

- Location: We recognise that location plays an important role. We would not want to match a family and a teacher who lives on the other end of Singapore. We will match best by locating the Quran Teacher that is closest to you.

- Experience: Teaching children and teaching adults can be very different. Some of our Quran Teachers are well trained in handling children than adults and they prefer to teach children. Vice versa, you would want a Quran Teacher to be able to handle kids or children.

- Knowledge: You may prefer to have a more knowledgable Quran Teacher as you may only want to improve on Tajweed or embarking on Sanads. Some Quran Teachers can teach until a certain level. If you advance further, you may need to have another teacher to teach advance reading methodology.

One to One Al Quran Reading

The One to One Al Quran Reading is suitable for busy individuals that have to travel frequently for work or Business or work shifts.
