Pain according to the Prophet s.a.w. provides benefits for the sufferer. Many people complain of the pain they suffer, be it mild or severe. Pain sometimes makes some people succumb to the disease. They complain and ask for mercy from others as if his illness is the worst he feels.
This
act is not allowed in Islam. Rasulullah s.aw. once said, "Do not abuse fever, because indeed (with this disease) Allah will wash away the sins of the children of Adam as a furnace removes the impurities of iron." (HR Muslim)
Pain does not always mean disaster. Pain can be a blessing that we can take a lesson from.
First, pain can save us from the torments of hellfire. In a narration it is explained that the Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said, "The fever keeps every believer away from the fire of hell." (HR al-Bazzar)
Second, sickness can be a sin for us. As the words of the Prophet s.a.w. in the hadith narrated by Muslim, "It does not befall a believer continuous pain, exhaustion, disease, and sadness, even to the distress that troubles him, but with him his sins will be erased."
Third, illness can
be a source of goodness for someone if he is patient. This is in line with a hadith where the Prophet s.a.w. said:
"Indeed, all his affairs are good, and this does not happen except for the believer. If he gets joy, then he is grateful and that is good for him, and if he gets trouble, then he is patient, and
this is good for him." (HR Muslim)
Fourth, illness can make us remember Allah again. As is known, sometimes we only remember Allah in times of trouble and are given trials. Meanwhile, when we are given happiness, we suddenly forget the Lord of the worlds.
Allah SWT. has said: "And verily We have sent (the Apostles) to the peoples before you, then We punished them with (afflicting) misery and poverty, so that they ask (to Allah) with humility." (Surat al-An'am: 42)
Fifth, illness can make us more optimistic to survive. One of the morals that must be possessed by a believer is not to give up on his illness. He must try to recover from his illness, he must also be optimistic about himself until Allah s.w.t. told him to stop.
