LEGAL PAYING FIDYAH

And it is obligatory for people who are hard to carry it out (if they are not fasting) to pay fidyah (ie) to pay for food for one poor person.

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 184)

Paying the debt of fasting with fidyah, namely feeding one poor person, is done three times a day, according to the usual meal schedule. In addition to providing food, fidyah can also be done by giving cash. This cash distribution is adjusted to the price of 1 mud of rice for each meal.

HOW TO CALCULATE FIDYAH

The amount of fidyah that needs to be paid is at least 1 mud, or the equivalent of 3/4 liters of staple food. There are also scholars who say, the amount of fidyah is 2 mud or the equivalent of 1.5 kg of staple food.

There are also those who say as much as 1 sha or the equivalent of 2.75 liters of staple food. However, it is better to pay for it by giving the poor enough food for a day (3x a day) with a portion that is quite filling.

So fidyah is adjusted to the standard price of one serving of food. Example 1 x Meal = SGD5 x 3 (in a day) then the nominal fidyah is SGD 15 for 3x mustahik meals in a day, complete with side dishes.

WHO OBLIGATES TO PAY THE FIDYAH?

The majority of Ulama agree that the law of fidyah is obligatory, based on the verse "And it is obligatory for people who are hard to do it (fasting) to pay fidyah, namely feeding the poor."

(QS. Al-Baqarah: 184)

People who leave fasting are sometimes the ones who have to pay the fidyah and make up the fast, sometimes they are required to pay.

1. Pregnant/breastfeeding and worried about the baby's health (fidyah and qhada)

2. Failure to make up for fasting until the next Ramadan comes (fidyah and qhada)

3. Severe illness has little chance of recovery (fidyah only)

4. The elderly can no longer fast (only fidyah)
