For every cent means saving a precious life
In Islam, wealth (al-maal) is anything that is utilized and owned by a person to fulfill his life needs. Everything can be categorized as al-maal if it can fulfill human needs, bring satisfaction and peace to humans. For example gold, livestock, and agricultural land.
Allah s.w.t. said: "It is made to feel beautiful in the eyes of humans, love for what they want, in the form of women, children, property piled up in the form of selected gold and silver horses, livestock and rice fields. That is the pleasure of living in this world, and with Allah is a good place to return.”
(Q.S. Ali Imran [3]: 14).
Division of property
First: Syara' Protection
Valuable assets, namely assets that have a price. These assets
can be categorized as valuable assets based on two conditions.
First, property which is the result of business and can be owned. Second, assets that can be utilized according to syara' in conditions of spaciousness and not urgent, such as money, houses, and so on.
Assets that have no value, namely assets that do not meet one of the two criteria above. For example the fish in the sea, all the fish in the ocean do not belong to anyone.
Second: Movable and Immovable Property
Immovable property, namely all types of property that cannot be moved from one place to another. For example land, buildings, and so on.
Movable property, namely all property that can be moved from one place to another. For example cars, household furniture, and so on.
Third: Assets that have in common
Similar assets, that is, types of assets that have equivalents on the market, do not make the slightest difference. For example wheat, rice, corn, dates, and the like.
Dissimilar assets, namely assets that basically have no equivalent. For example a diamond, a diamond, a rare pearl.
Fourth: consumptive and non-consumptive assets
Consumptive assets,
that is, all assets will run out when utilized. For example food, drink, and the like. Non-consumptive assets, namely assets that can be utilized while the materials are still there. For example books, cars, and the like.
Fifth: Assets that can be owned and cannot be owned
Assets that absolutely can be owned, in the form of assets that are devoted to the public interest. For example roads, bridges, public facilities and so on.
Assets that cannot be owned except with the permission of syara', such as assets that have been
donated. Waqf assets may not be traded, unless it is feared or it is clear that the expenses for maintaining the waqf assets are greater than the benefits obtained.
