Eating and Drinking Manners According to Islam
• Recite basmalah before eating and drinking
Reciting basmalah before eating and drinking is very important etiquette according to Islam.
• Maintain the halal food and drinks
The food and drinks should be kept halal. Starting from the source of the sustenance, the process of managing the sustenance, and the materialization of the food and drink. This is because halal and unlawful sources of sustenance could influence our behavior, either good or bad.
• Eat and drink while sitting
As a Muslim who maintains the good etiquette, it is best to eat and drink while sitting. Medically speaking, food and drinks that enter our body through the sitting
process are better absorbed in the body than those who drinks while standing.
• Use the right hand
It is the best to use our right hand unless it is not functioning properly. The nature of the
left hand only helps the right hand. Using our right (right) hand is better and in addition, licking leftover food on our fingers is also part of sunnah.
• Do not talk while eating and drinking
We are not encouraged to talk while drinking or eating in order to have a smooth and healthy consumption process.
• Do not criticize food and drink
A good Muslim should not criticizes the
food and drink given by others. It is also important to appreciate the rezki in front of us.
• Eat from the edge to the middle
Eating from the edge to the middle means that we do not stir up
the part that we have not eat. Furthermore, we are also encouraged to drink little by little to stay polite.
• Do not blow the food and drinks
It is better not to blow our food and drink as is
it a part of the religious teaching.
• Eat and drink without being too full
Eat and drink that is only enough to maintain your body and heart to stay healthy. Avoid being greedy.
• End eating and drinking with the recitation of hamdallah
Recite hamdallah after you have finished your meal. With that, Allah SWT will bless our sustenance as a provision to gain His
approval.
