Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating partners with You in any way, and I seek Your forgiveness for that which I do not know. Ameen.
Al-Quran and Hadith have explained that it has
indeed become a natural thing that it is difficult for humans to be separated from their homeland. In other words Patriotism.
Narrated from Ibn Abbas r.a. that the Prophet s.a.w. once said in Makkah:
"How good you are, O Makkah, and how much I love you, if my people had not removed me from you, I would not have stayed anywhere other than you." (Hadith Narrated by
at-Tirmizi)
Love for the motherland needs to be embroidered with the principles of Shariah and not just mere sentiment. Fighting to defend the homeland from being invaded, colonized and so on is also in line with the demands of Shariah.
In describing patriotism or the spirit of love for the country, it must be in accordance to the balance of Shariah, away from the deviation of
asabiyyah.
Asobiyyah, in short is defending and winning our side blindly, without considering who is right and who is wrong. In the aspect of Patriotism and Nationalism, it must be built on the basis of truth.
For Muslims, fighting and also praying for the success of their nation and country
is a must. Prophet Ibrahim a.s. fought and always prayed for the peace and prosperity of his country, as immortalized in the Holy Quran:
(Remember) when Ibrahim prayed, "O my Lord, make this (Makkah state) a safe land and give sustenance in the form of fruits (crops, plants that can be eaten) to its inhabitants, that is, those who believe
among them in Allah and the Day End.” He (Allah) said, "Whoever disbelieves, I will give him temporary comfort, then I will force him into the torment of Hell. That's the worst place to come back to." (QS. al-Baqarah: 126).
May the love for our homeland, guided by Al-Quran and Hadith, be one of the channels for us to obtain the ticket of Allah s.w.t. for HIS heaven.
Wallahu a'lam
