Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating partners with You in any way, and I seek Your forgiveness for that which I do not know. Ameen.

What would we do if it was reported to us that soon a special guest would come to our house? What if the guest is an important person who has a super busy schedule but still wants to make time to come to our city, even to our house?

Of course, we will prepare ourselves well before the guests arrive; whether it is forming a committee for the reception and all the activities, the catering which must ensure delicious food, and the decorations that must be made as beautiful as possible. Everything is done so that guests feel happy and so that they have beautiful memories when they part with us.

Perhaps that is the parable of how our Companions prepare themselves to welcome special guests, the holy month of Ramadan. They prepare themselves long before Ramadan arrives. The Companions in the past prayed to Allah for six months so that they could meet the month of Ramadan. This means that six months before Ramadan they prayed to Allah to meet this special guest in this glorious month. In the month of Rejab they are used to routinely praying, "Allahumma baarik lanaa fii Rajab wa Sya'ban wa ballighnaa Ramadhaan."

Then when they entered the month of Sha'ban, they prepared themselves as well as possible. In the month of Sha'ban, our companions increase their worship and good deeds, especially fasting. They imitate the Prophet who increased his fasting this month.

This was witnessed by his wife, Ummul Mu'minin Aisyah r.a., "I have never seen the Messenger of Allah s.a.w. complete a month's fast, except for Ramadhan. And I did not see him fasting more than in other months except in the month of Sha'ban."

However, there are other advantages of the month of Sha'ban, which is one of the reasons why the Prophet s.a.w. did a lot of fasting. The priority is that the month of Sha'ban is the month in which human deeds are elevated to Allah s.w.t. As stated in the hadith of Usamah bin Zaid's friend r.a. he said, "I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have not seen you fasting in a month like you fast in the month of Sha'ban." He s.a.w. answered, "That month, many people are negligent, namely (the month) between Rajab and Ramadhan, the month when deeds are appointed to the Lord of the worlds, and I want my deeds to be lifted while I am fasting." (HR. An-Nasa'i)
