Life-Saving Response to Rohingya Refugees in
Indonesia
Hundreds of refugees have been rescued at sea off the coast of northern Indonesia after taking incredibly dangerous journeys to flee in search of safety. An estimated 1,262 Rohingya refugees arrived in October 2023. Over 2,000 refugees have been to be disembarked in November 2023. 77% of it is women and children. In addition to
that, 139 Rohingya were also reported to arrive on December 2, 2023. This is unlikely to be the final numbers to arrive late last year. The number of refugees may increase every month.
What YOU can do
UNHCR lacks enough funding to provide for all the needs of the refugees, including food, water, health services, sanitation, and shelter. And the needs are dire. Some families are still currently
living in temporary tents, which provide little protection, especially in the current heavy rain season, and which are also undignified, with no privacy and no toilets nearby. In others, families are staying in buildings that are in disrepair without proper electricity. Many of the refugees – especially the children – are facing serious health conditions resulting from their sea journey. In some locations, there is mental health support to help people cope with the trauma that they
experienced.
- Provide essential items: plates and cutlery, pillows and blankets, diapers, mosquito nets, dignity kits for women, and praying materials. - Provide access to healthcare - Ensure adequate food and nutrition - Keep refugee children safe
