Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, Most of us know Allah as Al-Ghafur. The One who forgives. The One who covers our sins so they are not exposed or punished. But Allah also introduced Himself as Al-‘Afuw. And Al-‘Afuw does not merely forgive. He erases. Not hiding the sin. Not overlooking it. But removing it completely, as if it never stood. Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله explained that ‘afw is deeper than maghfirah. Maghfirah covers the sin. ‘Afw removes its trace. No record. No residue. No shadow left behind. This is why the Prophet ﷺ
taught us a very specific du‘a for the most sacred nights of our lives: للَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي “O Allah, You are the Pardoner, and You love to pardon, so pardon me.” Not just forgive me, but erase what remains. Because some sins are forgiven… yet they still live in us. Memories we replay. Versions of ourselves we regret. Moments we wish had never happened. Al-‘Afuw speaks to that weight. Before fasting
begins. Before Ramadan intensifies. Before deeds multiply. There is something we need even before productivity. We need cleansing. Not the kind that hides the
file. The kind that deletes it. The scholars said Allah does not only do ‘afw. He loves it. Which means He inclines toward erasing for those who return sincerely. So perhaps before asking, “What will I do this Ramadan?” We ask something quieter. What do I need erased? A sin no one knows about except Allah? A resentment that hardened the heart? A compromise we never addressed? Al-‘Afuw is not about pretending it did not happen. It is about returning so honestly that Allah chooses to remove its trace. And when Allah erases, He does not remind. May we meet the Day our records are opened and find pages we feared… missing. May Al-‘Afuw erase what we could not carry into His presence. Wallahu a‘lam. |
