[Newsletter] 9 April 2019

Assalamualaikum Wr Wb,

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, we ask for your peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad SAW. Thank you for subscribing to our mailing list. In shaa Allah this email finds you and your family in the best of health and imaan. May the peace and blessings of Allah SWT be upon you and your family, in shaa Allah.

Sha’bān is the eight month of the Islamic lunar calendar; the month that precedes Ramadan. The literal meaning of the word Sha’bān is something that is successively developing or uninterruptedly increasing. This is a month in which the Prophet incessantly fasted.

When the Prophet was asked why fasted so much in Sha’bān; the Prophet replied;

“There is a month between Rejab and Ramadān of which many people are neglectful; it is the month in which deeds are raised (for evaluation) to the Lord of the universe, and I love to be in a state of fasting when my deeds are taken up for evaluation.” [an-Nisā’i]

As Ramadan is visiting us soon, use this month to prepare yourself; spiritually and physically. Train yourself to think good of other people. To think positive of everything, and believe that surely there will come ease after all hardships right?

In this blissful month, let us try to get rid of all the bad and negative atoms we have in us and channel it into something good. Just a few days ago, I met up with my uncle who is a convert and he shared with me about the beauty of Islam and how one can find peaceful in themselves. He said to me, don’t encourage envy and jealousy to grow in your heart. Once you do, it will never make you feel grateful and always feels like nothing is enough in this world.

He shared that envy is an evil disease of the heart that leads to foul conduct and bad behavior. It leads to animosity, thinking evil of the intentions of others, backbiting, tale-bearing, lying, and the abandonment of other Muslims. It is considered to be among the most dangerous and destructive of internal diseases and is the most destructive to a person's religion and worldly life.

The Messenger of Allah PBUH said:
"Do not envy one another; do not hate one another; do not turn your back on one another (in discontent); (but) be slaves of Allah as brothers." [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]

The Messenger of Allah PBUH also said:
“Indeed envy eats up good deeds just as fire consumes firewood.” [Ahmad]

Imaam Al-Ghazzaali, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his book Al-Ihyaa':

"Be aware that envy is one of the deadliest diseases of the hearts, and there is no medicine for the diseases of the heart except through knowledge and deeds.

The fact is that envy is actually dangerous for the envier's religion because it is through this envy that he hated Allah's predestination and the blessings that He divided among his slaves; he also hated His justice that He established in His world due to His Wisdom; therefore, the envier contested that and objected to it. This is contrary to belief in the Oneness of Allah.

Additionally, the envier would share with Satan and the rest of the disbelievers a love for crises to befall the believers and for blessings to leave them. These are evils in the heart that devour good deeds and erase them like the night erases the day. The person who suffers from envy in his life is tortured by it, and will always be in sorrow every time he sees the blessings of Allah upon the envied person."

You see being jealous and envy doesn’t do you any good. It is a heart disease that makes you feel empty and feel everything that you already have is not enough. You keep comparing your life with others. Because why? You don’t know what is your sole purpose in life. You don’t know what are you looking for in this world.

Take a moment and look at your life. You will realize that you have everything, but something is missing. It is this missing thing that drives us to keep wanting and never be happy. We seek to keep fulfilling that emptiness or itch by seeking more things, achievements, gold medals, money.

What is missing is something that we already have, but we tend to belittle. We lost sight the joy of being human and connecting with ourselves, laughing with family and friends, enjoying nature, a simple meal, and the little things that play a big role in our life.

Without knowing what you want in life, what you love, or your purpose, you will continue to be lost. One cannot buy purpose, it must be found. Once you find it your happiness will be based on that purpose or connection, and not anything outside of it. That makes you rich in your heart. The ultimate purpose in life is to worship and connect with God.
I have created jinn and man for no other purpose than to worship Me  (Qurʾān 51:57).
