We will now be welcoming Encik Zul Qaedah, the 11th month and the 2nd last month of the Islamic calendar. Zul Qaedah literally means “sitting” in Arabic. During this month, it is believed that the Arabs would sit and stop fighting because they will be busy preparing themselves for the month of Zul Hijjah, the month of Hajj. This is also because Zul Qaedah is one of the sacred months in the Islamic calendar. As said by
the Prophet s.a.w, “O People! Time has gone back to how it was at the time Allah created the Heavens and the Earth. A year has twelve months, four of which are sacred, three consecutive, Thul-Qi’dah, Thul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab, which comes between Jumaadaa and Sha’baan.” [Al-Bukhari]. Thus, the Arabs respect the sanctity of these sacred months, by adhering to the commandments of Allah s.w.t and rejecting that which the people of the pre-Islamic period were
upon.
Did you know what happened in Zul Qaedah according to the Islamic history? Have you ever wonder about the important events that happened during Zul Qaedah? These are the list of events that happened in the past during the month of Zul Qaedah. Firstly, the battle of Khandaq took place in the year 5 Hijrah. Secondly, the Truce of Hudaubiyah took place in the 6 Hijrah. Thirdly, the Baitul Rizwan took place in 6 Hijrah. Lastly, the return
of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. and his companions to Makkah for Umrah took place in the year 7 Hijrah.
Here is a little summary of the Battle of Khandaq, the Trench. This battle happened as a consequence of Banu Nadir tribe getting expelled from Madinah, for their treachery and waging war against the Muslims. So now, the Banu Nadir’s chief leaders were making alliances with other enemies in Arabia against Muslims. This tribe now aided and incited the Quraish to attack Muslims in Madinah. Hence, Prophet Muhammad
s.a.w commanded his companions to defend the city by digging a trench around Madinah in order to save the city from invasion. The idea of digging up a trench was suggested by a Persian Muslim convert Salman Al Farisi.
Banu Nadir and Banu Qainuqa' who were expelled out of Madinah for waging war against the Muslims, were now helping polytheist Quraish leaders. Abu Sufyan who is one of the leaders of Quraish had rounded up a force of 10.000 men to attack Madinah and were ready to kill the Muslims once for all. However, all Prophet Muhammed s.a.w could gather to fight back was only 3000 men. But with his determination and Allah's s.w.t will,
the Muslims managed to win the battle. What more with Salman Al Farisi's brilliant tactical idea, it really has helped in the victory of the Muslims.
