So, the 2nd event that took place was the Truce of Hudaibiyah. it happened during the 6 Hijrah. After settling down in Madinah for almost 6 years, the Muhajirin planned to visit Mecca. Mecca is significant to the Muslims because:
- Ka'bah, the Kiblah of the Muslims, is located in Mecca
- Mecca is the place of origin of the Muhajirin
- Mecca is the location where the 1st revelation was revealed
Prophet Muhammad s.a.w agreed with their idea. He himself wish to perform Umrah. Unfortunately, the Muslim's journey to Mecca was disturbed and block by the Quraish of Mecca at a place called Hudaibiyah.
Uthman bin al-Affan was sent to Mecca as a representative to negotiate with the Quraish. But he was ignored. On the other hand, the rumour of Uthman’s death was spreading. This rumour has led to the happening of Baitul Rizwan. Nevertheless, the Quraish was worried and went to meet the Prophet s.a.w.
They sent Suhail bin Amru as a representative to meet the Prophet s.a.w. The outcome of the meeting was the establishment of the Truce of Hudaibiyah.
The contents of Truce of Hudaibiyah were as follow:
- Prophet s.a.w and his followers would return to Madinah and will return for Umrah the following year
- There would be peace between the Muslims and the Quraish for a period of 10 years from the date of the signing of the treaty.
- If any Meccan accepts Islam and seeks sanctuary with the Muslims in Madinah, they would extradite him to Mecca. But if a Muslim, fleeing from Madinah, seeks sanctuary with the pagans in Mecca, they would not extradite him.
- All the tribes of Arabia would be free to enter into treaty relations with any party – the Muslims or the Quraish.
- The Muslims would visit Mecca to perform the pilgrimage in the following year but they would not stay in the city for more than three days, and the only weapons which they would be allowed to bring with them, would be their swords in the
scabbards.
At the beginning, the companions did not agree with the contents because they see the contents as benefitting the Quraish instead of the Muslims. However, they finally accepted it for the sake of maintaining peace and as a starting point of building good relationship with the
Quraish. With the establishment of the Truce of Hudaibiyah, missions of Islam could be carried out.
