Surah Al-Fath, Verse 10
10. Verily, those who give pledge to you, they are giving pledge to Allah. The Hand of Allah is over their hands. Then whosoever breaks his pledge, breaks it only to his own harm; and whosoever fulfills what he has the covenants he makes with Allah, He will bestow on him a great reward.
Surah Al-Fath, Verse 18
18. Indeed, Allah was pleased with the believers when they gave the pledge to you under the tree, He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down As-Sakinah upon them, and He rewarded them with a near victory.
Sodaqallahul Azim.
As mentioned in our previous newsletter, Bai'atul Ridwan was one of the events that happened during Zul Qaedah. Bai'atul Ridwan means the Pledge of Acceptance. It was part of the history of Truce of Hudaibiyah although as a minor role.
The special thing about Bai'atul Ridwan, it is mentioned in the Quranul Karim, Surah Al-Fath, verse 10 and verse 18. Thus, proving to us that although Bai'atul Ridwan played a minor role in the Truce of Hudaibiyah but the significant of this event is something that we ought to acknowledge.
Here, we would like to share a summary of what Ibn Kathir has to say about the verses on Bai'atul Ridwan.
The Reason behind Bai'atul Ridwan
Initially Prophet s.a.w. wanted to send Umar Al-Khattab to Mecca so that he could inform the chiefs of Quraish of the Prophet's intention to Mecca. But Umar declined the Prophet’s proposal because he feared of his own limitation. He then recommended Uthman Al-Affan, a man of great personality. Thus, Uthman left for Mecca.
However, after a while the news of Uthman was killed by the Quraish reached the Propeht s.a.w. The Prophet s.a.w wanted to seek for justice. Thus, he called the Muslims to give a pledge of allegiance, which is known as the pledge of acceptance or Bai'atul Ridwan.
The pledge was conducted under a tree. This tree was known to be Samurah, a kind of thorny tree located in Hudaibiyah. The pledge was none other than a promise to not run away from battle. The Muslims gave their pledge and none among them held back from giving it.
Soon afterwards, news came to the Prophet s.a.w that the story of Uthman's death was not true. Despite that, the pledge became an evidence of the loyalty of the Muslims towards the religion and the Prophet s.a.w.
The Rewards
Allah s.w.t mentioned in Surah Al-Fath, verse 18 that HE is pleased with the believers who gave the pledge to Prophet s.a.w. Allah s.w.t promises calmness and tranquility upon them. HE also rewarded them with a near victory in reference to the goodness that they have done.
Since the pledge, Allah s.w.t has caused good results to happened to the Companions especially on all their peace treaty between them and their disbelieving enemies. The Companions also gained abundant, general and continuous benefits and accomplishments, leading to the conquest of Khaibar and Mecca and then the various surrounding provinces and areas. They earned tremendous
glory, triumphs and an elevated and honorable status in this life and in the Hereafter, just as Allah s.w.t said.
Indeed, Allah's s.w.t promises are great. Look out for our next newsletter for more great stories of Zul Qaedah!
