Zakat & Giving

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, fulfill my needs, raise my position, give me sustenance, give me guidance, give me good health and forgive me. Ameen.

Thank You for subscribing to our mailing list. We hope this email reaches you and your family in the best state of health and Iman, Ameen. We also hope that our newsletters and updates have been regularly been the food for your soul in becoming better Muslim and Muslimah, Ameen.

This week we will be moving on the 4th Pillar of Islam and that is Zakat. Just like Fasting, Zakat do not need much of an introduction when talking about its relationship to Giving. With the tagline "Tunaikan Zakat Kukuhkan Masyarakat" being written and said repeatedly during Ramadhan, our community has been successfully educated on the fact "Zakat = Giving".

But what our community failed to realize is Zakat DOES NOT ONLY for the poor and needy. This is where the concept of Giving through Zakat starts to go wrong. I would like to share a real experience.

"Eh nak sambung belajar abih minta-minta orang duit Zakat pulak. Takde duit jangan sambung belajar la. Kejer dulu. Kumpul duit".

Translation: You want to pursue your education but you are going around asking for Zakat? If you do not have the money, do not bother pursuing your education. Go and work. Save your own money.

See? Our community is still naive about the fact "Who qualifies for Zakat?". The fact is Zakat can also be extended to:

The student pursuing religious education
Amil - One who is appointed to collect Zakat
Muallaf - One who recently embraced Islam
Riqab - One who is freeing himself/herself from the bondage or shackles of slavery. In Singapore, this category refers to those who need some assistance to pursue their education, usually children of zakat recipients.
Gharimin - One who is in debt and needs assistance to meet his/her basic needs.
Fisabilillah - One who strives in the cause of Allah for the betterment of the community
Ibnussabil - Stranded travellers on a permissible journey.

Now you see the various medium that you can choose to start Giving?

Fidyah 2019 (Latest)

Looking for avenues to pay your Fidyah?

What is fidyah?

Fidyah is paid by those who are unable to fast owing to illness, old age or infirmity. Fidyah consists of paying for 2 meals for a person per day of fasting missed.

For those who missed fast for the last Ramadan 1440H, you can just replace it by making fasts before the next Ramadan. However if you had missed the fast in 1439H / 2018 and the years before that due to health issues, pregnancy, breastfeeding and other valid reasons, you may make it up by Fidya payment.

In this Wakf project, we are collaborating with an NGO in Cambodia, Organization for Community Development Cambodida (OCDC) to provide this muqaddam to the children, orphans, women and also to adults in Cambodia who wishes to learn to read the Al-Qur'an, beginning with the basic using Muqaddam that you have donated.

Wakaf Housing Project in Cambodia

The Messenger of Allaah (pbuh) said: “Part of a man’s happiness includes a good neighbor, a comfortable mount, and a spacious abode.”

As of now Alhamdulillah we have succeed in building 11 houses.

And now we are in the process of building another 1 more house.

Latest update:

2 house is in queue.

Insyallah we are able to take in 3-5 more houses.

Please note that each housing project may take about 3 months to a year to complete.
Depending on weather conditions and queue.

Shelter is one of our most basic needs: Without it, it is almost impossible to carry on any other kind of activity or live a comfortable life. Yet at least one in every four people worldwide live without decent housing and over 100 million people live in absolute homelessness. A place that keep us safe; A place we seek sanctuary from; A place to rest and sleep in, that we can call home to most of us but not everyone has the opportunity to own it.

While we are living in the comfort of our homes protected, others in different parts of the world may not share the same fate. Despite working day and night to support their families, they are still too poor to build a house of their own.

Cambodia are home to nearly 2,700 homeless (as of 2017) who are living in poverty. How lucky are we to live in a HDB flat with clean tiles, proper room to sleep in and only our family members reside in it but as for them it is good enough to have a place to stay even if they have to share it with other families.

In this Wakaf project, we aim to aid and provide these families with proper housing. To give them a shelter that they need.

Gaza Food Aid Hampers!

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive [Quran 76:8]

Ibn ‘Abbas and Mujahid said, "This verse denotes that they feed the needy, the orphan and the captive despite the scarcity of food and their need and love for it."
