Last week, we have wrapped up the series of the important events of Zul Qaedah by featuring the story on Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. visit to Mecca. This also mean we are ready to wrap up the month of Zul Qaedah and welcome the final month in the Islamic calendar, Zul Hijjah.
In about 2 weeks from now, the Muslims will be celebrating the 2nd of the 2 major Islamic celebrations. Known by many names, such as Eid Adha, Eidul Adha, Hari Raya Haji, Hari Raya Qurban and Hari Raya Aidiladha, it is celebrated on 10th of Zul Hijjah. This celebration is considered holier compared to Eid
Fitri due to 2 reasons. Firstly, the completion of the annual Hajj. Secondly, the performing of Qurban.
WHAT IS HAJJ?
- It is a religious duty.
- It is the 5th Pillar of Islam.
- An annual pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims are expected to make at least once in their lifetime.
- Performing of specific Hajj rites from 8th to the 12th of Zul Hijjah.
HOW DID HAJJ COME ABOUT?
Historically, Hajj has its root to Prophet Ibrahim a.s. and his family. But the commandment and rites were only established during the time of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.
FOR WHO?
- For all Muslim adults.
- For all Muslim adults of sound mind.
- For all physically capable Muslim adults
- For all financially capable Muslim adults
WHAT ARE THE HAJJ RITES?
- Wearing of IHRAM: White garment.
- TAWAF: Walking counter-clockwise 7 times around the Ka’bah in Masjidil Haram.
- SA'IE: Running 7 times between the mountain of Al-Safa and Al-Marwah.
- 8th Zul Hijjah: Overnight in Mina.
- 9th Zul Hijjah: Wuquf in Arafah, where Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. gave his last sermon.
- 10th Zul Hijjah: Staying in Mudzalifah and collect pebbles.
- 10th, 11th and 12th Zul Hijjah: A symbolic stoning of ritual in which they fling pebbles at 3 walls known as Jamrat in Mina. This symbolizes how the devil tried to mislead Prophet Ibrahim a.s. from following Allah s.w.t. but was fought off when the Prophet
threw stones at the devil on 3 occasions.
- 10th Zul Hijjah: Marks the start of the 3-days festival of Eid Adha or Qurban, the festival of sacrifice.
- Qurban: Commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim a.s. and his son Prophet Ismail a.s.
