Last week we have touched on one of the observances that is central to Eid Adha and that is Hajj. Today, we will continue with the second observance that is Qurban.
WHY do we perform Qurban?
We perform Qurban as a religious practice that was started by Prophet Ibrahim a.s. by the commandment of Allah s.w.t. It is the act of slaughtering an animal – a goat, sheep, cow or camel – to reflect the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, for the sake of God.
The purpose of offering Qurban is to attain nearness to Allah s.w.t. The act of Qurban encompasses the very essence of Islam; submission to the will of Allah s.w.t. and the willingness to sacrifice whatever is asked of us to achieve closeness to Him, just as Prophet Ibrahim a.s. has demonstrated.
WHEN can we perform Qurban?
Qurban can be performed from the 10th Zul Hijjah after the completion of Eid Adha prayer until the sun sets on the 13th Zul Hijjah.
WHO has to perform Qurban?
Althought it is Sunnah, Qurban can be perform by any Muslim who can afford it financially.
WHAT are the Qurban rules?
1. Applicable animals are goats, sheep, cattle and camels, cows, bulls, buffalo
2. Goats and sheep must be at least one year old
3. Cows, bulls and buffalo must be at least two years old
4. Camels must be at least five years old
5. Animals should be slaughtered quickly and painlessly, with the use of appropriate equipment to ensure they do not suffer needlessly.
WHERE can Qurban be carried out?
Qurban can be carried out anywhere depending on the norm or culture of the particular place. But remember, as Muslims we have to continue observing the cleanliness of the place that we used to carry out the Qurban.
HOW do we distribute the Qurban?
The meat from the Qurban are distributed among 3 categories of people:
• 1/3 for the poor and needy.
• 1/3 for family members and friends.
• 1/3 for the person doing the Qurban - and this portion can be given to non-Muslims.
