Hussain Ibn Ali r.a. was born in 4th Hijri. He was the second grandson of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. He was the son of Fatimah r.a. and Ali r.a. Hussain's brother was Hassan Ibn Ali r.a. Hussain r.a. was the successor of his father and brother in leading Islam. He was brave and courageous man just like his father and grandfather. Hussain r.a. believed that peace was a key factor for the
propagation of Islam.
Unfortunately, Hussain r.a. lost his life on the 10th of Muharram in the battlefied of Karbala. The battle had its start due to Muawiyah's betrayal towards his oath he made to Hassan r.a.
Muawiyah made oath to Hassan r.a. saying that Hussain r.a. shall be the next leader of the Muslims after his death. However, when it was time to hand over responsibilities to Hussain r.a., Muawiyah chose his son Yazid as the leader instead. Yazid demanded that Hussain r.a. and his people pledge allegiance to him but Hussain r.a. knew that Yazid was in the wrong hence he refused. The
people abandoned Hussain r.a. out of fear but he remained steadfast in his decision to defend his faith at all costs.
The trajectory of events at Karbala are known to us all: man after man was slaughtered and brutally murdered by the army of Yazid who had rendered Hussain r.a. and his followers as traitors and ordered his army to kill them all. Hussain r.a. knew of the fate that his followers, his family and even he himself were to face but he knew he could not surrender to a tyrant. Hussain's r.a.
sacrifices kept the religion alive and thriving. Hussain r.a. was fearless, brave and steadfast.
The Prophet s.a.w is reported to have said: "These two sons of mine (Hassan and Hussain) are the leaders of youth in Paradise" [Reported by Tirmidzi, Vol.1, Book 46, Hadith 3768]
