As we are already entering Safar, the second month of the Islamic calendar, I hope everyone has settled down with their personal issues on Hijrah and have it sorted out. I supposed we are ready to embark the journey of befriending Allah s.w.t. One of the ways of befriending Allah s.w.t. is of course to get yourself immerse in the book of Allah s.w.t., the Al-Quranul Karim. If you can get yourself immerse in the wizardry
world of Harry Potter and the handsome and pretty vampires of Twilight, why not get yourself immerse in Allah's s.w.t. book of Wisdom, Al-Hikmah?
The first Surah, chapter, that you will stumble upon when you flip through the Al-Quran is Surah Al-Fatihah. Surah Al-Fatihah means the opening, appropriate with its position in the Al-Quran. It contains 7 ayat, verses and as Muslims we read it 17 times a day. But have you ever ponder over the greatness of this chapter that Allah s.w.t. made us read 17 times a day?
Here is a short list of seven amazing virtues of this short yet incredibly powerful chapter of the Al-Quran:
1. Surah Al-Fatihah is the greatest chapter in the Quran
When the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said to a companion that he would teach him the greatest chapter in the Quran, he recited Surah Al-Fatihah.
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Mu’alla:
The Prophet s.a.w. said: “Shall I not teach you the most superior Surah in the Qur’an?” He said, ‘(It is), ‘Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. ‘ (i.e., Surat Al-Fatihah) which consists of seven repeatedly recited Verses and the Magnificent Qur’an which was given to me.” [Sahih Al Bukhari]
2. Al-Fatihah is a pillar of the prayer
The Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said that “Whoever does not recite Surah Al-Fatihah in his prayer, his prayer is invalid”. [Sahih Al Bukhari]
3. It is the Mother of the Quran
The Prophet s.a.w. said that Al-Fatihah is “the Mother of the Quran, the Mother of the Book, the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses and the Great recitation.” [Tirmidhi]
4. It is the seven oft-repeated verses
Surah Al Fatihah is the seven oft-repeated verses as mentioned in Surah Al-Hijr, Verse 87. This is because it is repeated in every unit of prayer.
5. It is a cure for the heart
This Chapter contains a supplication for protection from misguidance and from the anger of Allah s.w.t. This thus protects the heart from corrupt knowledge and evil intentions. The hidden cure to both these illnesses is also found in the verse
“You (Oh Allah) we worship and from You do we seek help”. [Ibn Qayim]
Only 7 verses yet Surah Al-Fatihah contains these greatness? Seems unbelievable right? But that is the through of the book of Allah s.w.t.
