Saudah Binti Zam'ah r.a. was Prophet Muhammad's s.a.w. second wife. Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. marries Saudah r.a. after the demise of Khadijah r.a. Saudah r.a. was a widow upon marrying Prophet s.a.w. Her late husband was Sakran Bin Amar, her own cousin. Both Saudah r.a. and her late husband accepted Islam during its early days.
Saudah r.a. loved to give charity. She used to prepare things with her hands and present them to marriageable girls as dowry.
As Aishah r.a. narrates: "One day the wives of the Holy Prophet s.a.w. gathered in his presence and asked him, 'O Messenger of Allah, which one of us will be the first to reunite with you?' The Holy Prophet s.a.w. said 'The one with the longest hand!'
Then we found a stick and we all measured our hands. The hand of Zam'ah's daughter was the longest. Whereas, by saying 'long hand', the Holy Prophet s.a.w. had meant one who gives a lot of charity and certainly she loved to give charity".
When Umar r.a. was the Caliph, he allotted a regular payment to the wives of the Holy Prophet s.a.w. from the Treasury. He gave them ten thousand dirhams each. Because of the special place Aishah r.a. had with the Holy Prophet s.a.w., he made her allocation slightly higher than the others. Saudah r.a. used to give this money which Umar r.a. sent to her in charity to the poor and needy, alongside most of the
money she earned by embroidering leather.
Each charitable act that Saudah r.a. did was in the cause of Allah s.w.t. Whether it was during Prophet's s.a.w. time or after the death of Prophet s.a.w., especially during the caliphate of Abu Bakar r.a. and Umar r.a it was all for the sake of Allah s.w.t. and the religion. Never did she does to please the people or to ask for rewards in return.
