In our previous newsletters, we have read about the pioneers of Indian Muslim community and Arab Muslim community philanthropic acts in building mosques on their Wakaf land for the benefit of Muslim community of Singapore. Today, I will be introducing one of the pioneers of Malay Muslim community whose philanthropic act still stands strong providing the Muslims space to do their act of worship with
comfort.
Abdul Hamid Mosque situated at Gentle Road No. 10 was built on a wakaf land donated by Abdul Hamid Bin Marang and Hadjee Abdul Latib Bin Samydin. Though not much information could be found on Hadjee Abdul Latib, but it is believed that both were from Terengganu, migrated to Singapore due to Pahang Civil War occurred from 1858 till
1863.
Abdul Hamid Bin Marang was a Malay teacher. He was the son of Kampung Marang’s founder, Ahmad Omar or also known as Marang. Ahmad Omar was a wealthy businessman who gave Kampung Marang its name, and whom the present-day Marang Road is named after. He lived
in the area from the mid-1800s until 1920 when he died. Nevertheless, his son, Abdul Hamid Bin Marang, is on record as having provided funding for the 1932 Abdul Hamid Mosque, which still stands in Novena. He died in 1945.
The income received by the mosque to be used for insuring mosque against fire and other charges, to pay for ceremonies and salaries of oifficials employed by the mosque and to be used for maintenance and repair of the mosque.
There are many ways and means when it comes to charity. So let's help us in our various Infaq Projects that we have to offer to you ALL YEAR ROUND! Probably not your money, but your effort in spreading it to
others!!
