GAZI HUSREY-BEG MOSQUE
Gazi Husrey-Beg Mosque was built in the 16th century by Gazi Husrey-Beg, an Ottoman governor. He was born in Serres, Greece to a Bosnian Muslim father, Ferhad and a Turkish mother, Selcuka. He earned the honorific title "GAZI", meaning hero, for his role in the conquest of Belgrade. Throughout his life, he has built a few buildings that reflected his philanthropic
legacy and one of them is the Gazi Husrey-Beg Mosque.
Gazi Husrey-Beg Mosque is the largest historical mosque in Bosnia. It is the most important architectural monument from the time of Ottoman rule in Bosnia. It was built as the central object of the Beg's endowment, Wakaf.
There are many Bosnian leaders buried in the mosque's courtyard including the politician Dr. Mehmed Spaho, the reformer Ali Bey Firdus and the poet Safvet Bey Basagic.
Apart from the Gazi Husrey-Beg Mosque, the compound also consist of a Madrasah and a Library, Maktab.
Till today, the mosque still attracts visitors from all around the world, coming to witness the magnificent mosque built by a hero whose philanthropic acts are undeniable.
