We hope you are well and in the best of health and iman. May Allah swt continue to bless your family and your life with his rahmah.
We would like to share this common question asked to us every year. We hope this will clarify this matter before you decide on performing the Qurban.
Aqiqah or Qurban?
Firstly we have to understand what is Aqiqah and what is Qurban?
Both acts are an act of sacrificing an animal or many animals to show gratitude to Allah swt. Beyond that there are many benefits to both Aqiqah and Qurban such as feeding the poor, continuing the Sunnah of our Prophets and more.
The difference:
When?
i) Aqiqah can be done anytime even during the Qurban time period.
ii) Qurban can only be done on the 10th of Dhulhijjah ( After Solat Eiduladha to 13th of Dhulhijjah ( before Asr ).
Why?
i) Aqiqah is done to give thanks or gratitude for the birth of a new child.
ii) Qurban is done to give thanks to our day to day lives and many more reasons that we should be grateful for. Ask your Asatizahs for more Whys?
Frequency?
i) Aqiqah is done once in a life time.
ii) Qurban can be done every year.
Quantities?
i) The sunnah is 1 sheep/goat for Baby Girls and 2 sheeps/goats for a Baby Boy.
ii) No limit. The one who wish to perform qurban can perform as many as you want.
However we are reminded about the intention of Qurban. Though we know it has no limits but It should not be done to show off one's wealth nor power. Let's be reminded whatever that we receive today is because of Allah swt. We are mere servants who carries on His mission and be intermediaries to help others along the way.
So back to the Question. Aqiqah or Qurban?
Our advise. If you have not done for your child Aqiqah, please do it first? It can be done now or during the Eiduladha period.
And if you have the extra funds, perform Qurban every year as part of your ibadah.
Feel free to ask us any questions about Qurban, Aqiqah and so on.
