It is the month of the year again where we celebrate our beloved Prophet's birthday by remembering him from all aspects. Be it his biography, his Sunnah, his contributions or his sacrifices, his Akhlaq and Adab, we take the opportunity to refresh and educate ourself and people around us on our beloved Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. Here is a summary of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. marriages and the reasons to
these marriages:
1. Khadijah Bintu Khuwailid
When Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. was 25 he got marrried for the first time to Khadijah who was 40 years old and a widower who had married twice before this marriage. She died at the age of 65 .
2. Saudah Bintu Zam'ah
Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. married her when he was 50 and she was 65 years old. She was a widow ,very poor and there was no body to care for her. This was the reason why Prophet s.a.w. married her.
3. Aishah Bintu Abu Bakar As-Siddiq
Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. married Aishah when she was 9 years old and he was 56.
He married her primarily for three reasons :
- To reinforce the friendly relations with Abu Bakar r.a.
- To educate and train Aishah so she may serve the purpose of imparting knowledge of Islam.( She was very intelligent and had a tremendous grasping power)
- To teach her to utilize her capabilities for the sake of Islam.
4. Hafsah Bintu Umar
She was the daughter of Umar r.a., the second caliph. When she became widow at the age of 22 , Umar r.a. tried to marry her to Abu Bakar r.a. and then to Uthman r.a. but both of them refused to marry. Thereafter he went to the Prophet s.a.w. and complained about the behaviour of Abu Bakar and Uthman r.a. Later on the Prophet s.a.w. himself agreed to marry her. At the time of this marriage Muhammad s.a.w. was 56 and Hafsah was 22 years
old.
5. Zainab Bintu Khuzaimah
She was 30 years old when her husband died in the battle of Badar, leaving her poor and with several children. She was the wife of Ubaidah Bin Haris a faithful Muslim. Muhammad s.a.w. married her when he was 58 years of age. She was nicknamed Ummul Al Masakeen because of her kindness and charity. She died 3 months after she married Prophet s.a.w.
6. Hindun Bintu Abu Umayyah
Her husband, Abu Salamah bin Abdul Asad, died in battle of Uhud, leaving her as a poor widow with many children. She was at least 65 years old at the time. Several persons asked her to marry them, but because she loved her husband very much, she refused the marry any one of them. But finally she accepted Prophet Muhammad's s.a.w. offer to marry her and take care of her children. At the time their marriage Prophet s.a.w. was 58 years old.
7. Zainab Bintu Jahsh
She was the daughter of Prophet Muhammad's s.a.w. paternal aunt, Umamah Bintu Abdul Mutallib. Prophet s.a.w. arranged her marriage with Zaid bin Harith, who was the adopted son of the Prophet s.a.w. This marriage did not last long and Zaid divorced Zainab. Traditionally the adopted sons were counted as the real sons by the Arabs, but this tradition was eliminated by Islam. Muhammad's s.a.w. decision to marry Zainab was an attempt to break the hold of pre-Islamic ideas. Initially he was
reluctant to marry Zainab, fearing public opinion . When Zainab's waiting period was complete, Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. married her. Prophet s.a.w. was 58 and Zainab was 35 years old. A sect in Medina called as Hypocrites ( Munafiqeen) cricized the marriage and spread rumours in an attempt to divide the Muslims. However, the marriage was justified by the Holy Quran ( Surah Ahzab No.33 ayat No. 37 ).
8. Juwairiyah Bint Al-Harith
Her first husband's name was Musafi’ ibn Safwan and was divorcee/widow. Prophet s.a.w. wanted Juwairiyah's tribe to convert to Islam. When Muslims won the battle of Mustaliq, Juwairiyah became the prisoner. Her father came to Prophet s.a.w. and offered a payment for her release. In the mean time, Prophet s.a.w. asked her father to give her a choice. When the choice was given to her, she replied that she wont go as she had accepted Islam. She was a complete devoted Muslim and used
to fast three days in every month. Later, Prophet s.a.w. married her and that time he was 59 years old. The marriage event had taken a political turn and her tribe of Bani Mustaliq accepted Islam.
9. Safiyyah Bintu Huyayy
Safiyyah belonged to a Jewish tribe Banu Nadir. Her husband was killed when Muslims fought against her tribe. At that time she was 17 years old. Prophet s.a.w. married her when he was 61. Before the marriage she was offered to go back with her tribe but she said that she had accepted Islam. She had respected Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. as Allah's s.w.t. last Messenger. She took all the pains to look after him, care for him and provide every comfort to him.
10. Umm Habibah Bintu Abi Sufyan
She had married to Ubayd-Allah, who became Muslim and then after some time converted to Christianity. She was a good Muslim so she left her husband and lived with dignity till Muhammad s.a.w. marrried her. She was highly pleased to marry the Prophet s.a.w. At the time of this marriage the age of Prophet s.a.w. was 61 years, but her age is not known.
11. Maimunah Bintu Al-Harith
Her first husband was Abd Al-Rahman. When Mecca was conquered, she came to the Prophet s.a.w. and proposed to marry him. This marriage had encouraged many Meccans to accept Islam, secondly the Prophet s.a.w. also established good relations with the Makhzum, his previously fierce opponents. The age of Prophet was 60 and she was 36 years old.
12. Maria Al-Qibtiyya
She was sent to the Prophet s.a.w. as a gift. She had been raised in Egypt as a Christian. When she reached Medina she had accepted Islam. Thereafter she married to the Prophet s.a.w. and was allotted a Garden house in upper Medina. Prophet s.a.w. had a son through her who was named as Ibrahim. She was loved and liked by all other wives of the Prophet s.a.w. It was unfortunate that Ibrahim fell seriously ill and died when he was 18 months
old.
