Cat is a small domesticated carnivorous mammal with soft fur, a short snout, and retractable claws. It is widely kept as a pet or for catching mice, and many breeds have been developed. It is a pet admired and loved by many.
Cats are admired for their cleanliness. In Islam, cats are considered clean and are allowed to enter homes and even mosques. Water from which cats have drunk is permitted for wudu'.
The Prophet s.a.w. said: "A woman was tortured and was put in Hell because of a cat which she had kept locked up till it died of hunger. Allah's Apostle further said, Allah said (to the woman), 'You neither fed it nor watered it when you locked it up, nor did you set it free to eat the insects of the earth". [Reported by Imam Bukhari].
We have roughly seen the status of cat in Islam. A pet that is well cared. But we must remember that kindness towards animals is not only subjected to cats alone but to all other animals too.
Nevertheless, the claim that says Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. used to own a cat named Muezza has been famously circulated. But how far is this truth?
As far as studies have been done, there is not a single sahih narration which states that the Prophet s.a.w. ever had or keep a cat named Muezza even though the story is famous in our society.
There are no renown hadith books that contained any narrations which state that the Prophet s.a.w. had or keep a cat named Muezza.
Although there do exist famous narrations about Muezza but they are of no origin as stated in renown books.
Thus, the claim that says Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. used to own a cat named Muezza is untrue. Until new studies are done and the truth is being revealed together with its evidence, this claim remains untrue.
