In Islam, good manners is one of the thing that is very central to our life as a Muslim. It is not only done for building a good reputation of ourselves towards others, hablu minan nas but also to please Allah s.w.t and to gain His blessings in this world, hablu minallah. Above all, good manners helps to develop a civilize society.
Islam has rules of etiquette and an ethical code involving every aspect of life. These rules can be found in the Al-Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. It is our task as a Muslim to dig out these gems and put it into practise.
Thus, in welcoming and uplifting the spirit of Ramadhan, let's us take a look at some of the commandments of good manners in the Al-Quran which we can try to put into practise. May this help us to polish ourselves into being a better Muslim this Ramadhan and may we be Istiqomah in practising it. Ameen.
1. Don’t lie (22:30)
2. Don’t insult (49:11)
3. Don’t waste (17:26)
4. Feed the poor (22:36)
5. Don’t backbite (49:12)
6. Keep your oaths (5:89)
7. Don’t take bribes (27:36)
8. Restrain your anger (3:134)
9. Think good of others (24:12)
10. Be good to guests (51:24-27)
11. Don’t be rude to parents (17:23)
12. Turn away from ill speech (23:3)
13. Don’t make fun of others (49:11)
14. Walk in a humble manner (25:63)
15. Don’t say what you don’t do (62:2)
16. Don’t take items without right (3:162)
17. Don’t ask unnecessary questions (5:101)
18. Don’t be miserly nor extravagant (25:67)
19. Don’t call others with bad names (49:11)
20. Speak nicely, even to the ignorant (25:63)
21. Don’t ask for repayment for favours (76:9)
22. Lower your voice and talk moderately (31:19)
23. Don’t let hatred cause you to be unjust (6:108)
25. Be just, even against yourself & relatives (4:135)
25. Don’t criticize small contributions of others (9:79)
26. Preach to others in a good and wise manner (16:125)
27. Don’t turn your cheek away from people in arrogance (31:18)
28. Forgive others, as you would like Allah to forgive you (24:22)
29. If unable to help a needy person, at least speak nice words (17:28)
30. Verify information from a dubious source before acting upon it (49:6)
