The first battle in the Islamic history is the battle of Badr. Sadly it took place during Ramadan, 17th of Ramadan to be exact. It was a battle between the Muslims and the people of Quraish. With an army of 313 men, Prophet s.a.w. stood against 1000 Quraish men who were ready to kill the Muslims and the religion, Islam, that was spreading rapidly.
The Muslims were facing with a few problems during the battle or Badr. First and foremost was of cause the lack of fighting men. Secondly, iy was during the month of Ramadan. Thirdly, most of the Muslime were not trained fighters. And fourthly, the Muslims were lacking of the proper arms and ammunition for war. The Prophet s.a.w. was aware of the advantage the Quraish had. Thus, before going into the battle, he prayed to the Allah
s.w.t. asking for HIS help:
“O Allah! I ask you the fulfillment of Your Covenant and Promise. O Allah! If You wish (to destroy the believers) You will never be worshiped after today." Abu Bakr caught him by the hand and said, "This is sufficient, O Allah's Apostle! You have asked Allah pressingly." The Prophet was clad in his armor at that time. He went out, saying: "Their multitude will be put to flight and they wilàl show their backs. Nay, but the Hour is their
appointed time (for their full recompense) and that Hour will be more grievous and more bitter (than their worldly failure).” (Bukhari 4:52:164,452)
Because of this prayer, Allah s.w.t. responded with thousands of angels to assist the Muslims in the battle.
The battle of Badr was recorded in the Holy Quran:
“Indeed Allah assisted you at Badr when you were weak, so be careful (to your duty) to Allah so that you may be of the thankful ones. When you said to the believers ‘Does it not suffice you that your Lord should assist you with three thousand angels sent down’”. (Quran 3:123).
For the Muslims, this battle was a test on their patience and faith. They all stood firmly next to the Prophet s.a.w. and did not falter for even a moment. And surely Allah s.w.t. makes it easier for those who are steadfast in their belief.
