The Qur’an uses a variety of thinking styles to convey and deliver its messages to human being and to ensure that human being understand these messages to lead a meaningful life in this world. Every human being that Allah created has different level of understanding. Therefore, to cater to the needs of all level, it is important that the Al-Quran uses variety of thinking styles. Some of the thinking styles used in the Qur’an are as follows:
Inquisitive thinking style
Inquisitive or in other words asking questions is one of the most effective tools in teaching and learning since it leads to the development of new connections in the brain’s neural network which, in turn, leads to new ideas and concepts. An example of questions being raised in the Qur’an:
Affirming belief: (Al-A’raf: 172).
When thy Lord drew forth from the Children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants, and made them testify concerning themselves, (saying): "Am I not your Lord (who cherishes and sustains you)?"- They said: "Yea! We do testify!" (This), lest ye should say on the Day of Judgment: "Of this we were never mindful"
Rational thinking style
Rational thinking means to exercise reason, sound judgment, or good sense on a given issue. The Qur’an used the rational style of thinking in the following areas:
Proving and affirming the existence of Allah, His Oneness, His attributes and that He is the only one that deserves to be worshipped:
(Al-Anbiya’: 22).
If there were, in the heavens and the earth, other gods besides Allah, there would have been confusion in both! but glory to Allah, the Lord of the Throne: (High is He) above what they attribute to Him!
Reflective/ Contemplative thinking style
The Qur’an urged human being to think, ponder and meditate upon the creation of the universe. The result of this self-reflection will be the appreciation towards Allah’s creation, self-tranquillity and remembrance of Allah. Some of the objectives of Reflective Thinking can be listed as:
i. To prove that the Qur’an is a revealed book from the Almighty Allah.
ii. To remind the believers that victory should be sought from Allah.
iii. To engrain belief on the Day of Judgment.
iv. To reactivate the natural disposition (innate nature).
v. To emphasize the Oneness of Allah and that He alone deserves to be worshipped.
Analogical thinking style
This style uses similes to indicate similarity of characteristics between two things. An example of a verse which relate to this style of thinking in the Qur’an is:
In discouraging polytheism, hypocrisy, and disbelief by revealing the consequences of their deeds in the Hereafter:
(Al-Nur: 39).
But the Unbelievers, - their deeds are like a mirage in sandy deserts, which the man parched with thirst mistakes for water; until when he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing: But he finds Allah (ever) with him, and Allah will pay him his account: and Allah is swift in taking account.
Scientific thinking style
The Qur’an enhances the thinking ability of man in matters of natural sciences so as to enable him to realize and recognize the greatness of Allah as The Creator and to utilize as well as to develop the findings resulting from the exercise of such thinking, for the betterment of humanity as a whole . An example of a verse regarding this style of thinking is:
(Fussilat: 11)
Moreover, He comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: "Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly." They said: "We do come (together), in willing obedience."
