It is amazing how philanthropic act of an individual or an organization can contribute to a country earning the title "Most Charitable Country". It is also shocking to find out that some countries, even those who are not rich, the people are notably generous. This is an exemplary we hope will motivate our future generation in continuing to do philanthropic activities, be it in a small or large scale.
Every year, the Charities Aid Foundation will be responsible to conduct a survey to find out how far is the involvement of people of each country in philanthropic activities, compile the statistics and present it in the World Giving Index.
Here are the top 10 countries of the most charitable country for the year 2021:
1. United States
The United States is ranked number one with a score of 58%. Of those surveyed, 72% reported helping a stranger, 61% reported donating to a charity and 42% reported having volunteered their time to an organization.
2. Myanmar
Myanmar is the second most charitable with an overall score of 58%. Despite being a lower-middle-income country and relatively low, Myanmar has the highest percentage of people donating to charities at 81%.
3. New Zealand
New Zealand is ranked third with an overall score of 57%. New Zealand scored 65% for donations, 64% for helping strangers and 41% for time volunteered.
4. Australia
Australia is the fourth most charitable. With an overall score of 56%, Australia scored 68% donating to charities and 64% for helping strangers.
5. Ireland
Ireland is the highest-scoring European country and also has an overall score of 56%. 62% reported helping a stranger, 69% reported donating to a charity and 38% reported having volunteered their time to an organization.
6. Canada
Canada is the sixth most giving country. Canada's overall score is 55% with 63% donating to charities, 64% helping strangers and 37% volunteering at an organization.
7. The United Kingdom
The United Kingdom has an overall charitable score of 54%. The U.K. scored 71% for donation, 60% for helping strangers and 30% for volunteering.
8. The Netherlands
The Netherlands is the eighth most charitable country with an overall score of 53%. The Netherlands scored 71% for donation.
9. Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's overall score is 51%. Sri Lanka scored 46% for volunteering, 50% for charity and 55% for helping strangers.
10. Indonesia
Indonesia is the tenth most charitable country in the world with an overall score of 50%. 69% reported having donated to charities, 42% reported helping a stranger and 40% reported volunteering at an organization. For Indonesia, Myanmar and Sri Lanka to be in the top 10 of the most charitable country really surprises me because they come from a lower-middle income country.
Thus, it is an eye opener and a wake-up call for me, coming from a high income country, yet unable to contribute as much as the lower-middle income countries. I hope this is an eye opener for you too to start giving and contributing!! Let's start now!!
