The left hand should not know what the right is doing. There is wisdom in this advice. It is meant to encourage people to show discretion when performing a good deed such as charity.
Though Allah s.w.t. and Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. mentioned time and time again that the act of charity is great, very few people who help others without any expectation. Do not help others just for show off, help if you really mean. Morever the act of charity is deemed to be one of the most favourable acts in Islam.
These days, there are people whom while doing charity will click pictures with a note, “feeling great”. Why to show off?? Even you don’t put that image on social media, you will feel great. Donation is the one which you do without any expectation in return. A mind that expects return from donation is not doing charity but business.
Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. once said:
“…A man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity; and a man who remembered Allah in private and so his eyes shed tears.” [Abu Hurairah, Saheeh al-Bukhari, Vol.1, p.356, no.629]
This reminds us that we, as humans, need to acknowledge the difference we can make and the motives behind it. A lot of us have forgotten the real meaning of charity, and so have ended up doing it with the wrong intentions.
Thus, let's us all reflect on our actions and intentions. May it help us to be a better Muslim in the eyes of Allah s.w.t.
