Yasmin Mogahed in Singapore

Confessions of a Muslimah

Quite a number of people asked me what opened my heart to learn more and more about spirituality. I worry when I am posed with that question because I am still searching for that path of spirituality. I would be arrogant if I can one day ever say that I am indeed on a path of spirituality.

I can however share that I recalled for one whole year circa 2009-2010, my younger sister had often sent me links via email to read up on Yasmin Mogahed's writings. I hate to admit that I actually did not even read the first few lines and I actually ignored them all. They all went to my Trash Bin. I was lost in the corporate jungle then. I was lost in Friday night parties and lots of mingling events. I thought that I was in check with my life and matters of the heart and soul with the Creator could wait.

It was when I hit my lowest that my sister said, "You obviously have not read any of the links I sent you. Go read them now Kak."

I recalled everything from the Trash Bin and began reading. Soon I found myself yearning for more and more through reading her articles and listening to her lectures. And I began to discover myself... to discover God bit by bit. (Am still learning.)

I realised my understanding about Allah and Islam was so warped. I thought I was ok being that "modern Muslim corporate lady" according to my own ignorant, defensive and arrogant definition. Truth is, I just loved my tight pencil corporate skirts and nicely body-hugging fine-cut dresses. I loved this world too much.

"The same spellbinding waves, which we appreciate from the shore, can kill us if we enter. And the same ocean that holds ships afloat can shatter those ships to pieces." ~ Yasmin Mogahed

Yasmin Mogahed helped me and many of us realised things we did not see. I urge you, brothers and sisters to catch her on 24 April 14. I have non Muslim friends who are attending too. Afterall, it is human to have blindspots. You do not have to be Muslim, young or old to check your blindspots. You just have to be a driver of your own life.
