A Ray of Light in the Darkness
Mdm Shima (not her real name) was still recuperating from her injuries sustained from a hit-and-run accident in 2013 when her husband was imprisoned a year later. Overnight, she became the family’s sole breadwinner. Faced with financial and housing problems, she also takes care of her five school-going children single-handedly. Her eldest child is diagnosed with ADHD and has a cyst in his lungs, leading to health
complications. With the assistance received under AMP's Adopt a Family & Youth Scheme (AFYS), and her resilience and grit, Mdm Shima is gradually rebuilding her life. She now runs her own canteen food stall and is taking on food orders to support her family.
There are many other beneficiaries under AFYS who are going through such challenges. While their stories may differ, their perseverance and determination to push through their adversities and to come out stronger is common to all of them.

Shima, who is a beneficiary of AMP's Adopt a Family & Youth Scheme (AFYS). She will share on the struggles she faces as she plays the dual role of mother and sole breadwinner for her family while awaiting her husband’s release.
AFYS assists these families to regain their independence and self-reliance by equipping them with skills, helping their children through a variety of socio-educational schemes, programmes and activities, and most of all, AFYS helps to strengthen their family unit.
