Newsletter: Cure for Anger

Assalamualaikum Wr Wb,

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Thank you for subscribing to our mailing list. InshaAllah this email finds you and your family in the best of health and imaan. May the peace and blessings of Allah SWT be upon you and your family, inshaAllah.

In last week’s newsletter, we learned that the month of Zulqaeda is one of the months of Ashhurul Hurum, where the Arabs during the time of Rasulullah (SAW) were prohibited from going to war. The forbidden months that were mentioned in Surah at-Taubah Verse 36 are Zulqaeda, Zulhijjah, Rejab and Muharram. Imam asSyaukani in his tafsir Fathul Qadir explained that the verse referred to war, and any acts that lead to oppression and injustice. The forbidden months are aimed at softening our hearts and purifying our souls from feelings of anger, hatred, revenge and other diseases of the heart that can affect our spiritual health and the well being of our akhlak (character).

How do we overcome anger? Imam Mawlūd describes anger as a “swelling ocean.” Intense anger or wrath is a swelling mass of emotion that is difficult to hold back once it is unleashed. Anger is truly an amazing phenomenon if one reflects on its nature and presence in human life and character, its peril and liability, as well as its utility and necessity.

According to a hadith, a man asked the Prophet (SAW), “What is the worst thing that one incurs concerning God?” The Prophet (SAW) said, “His wrath.” The man then asked, “How do we avoid it?” The Prophet (SAW) said, “Do not become angry.”

Another man asked the Prophet (SAW), “Give me advice.” The Prophet (SAW) said “Do not become angry.” The man asked again, and the Prophet (SAW) repeated his advice. For a third time, the man asked the question, and the Prophet (SAW) said again, "Do not become angry.”

The repetition of this counsel stresses the importance of the Prophet’s admonition about anger. Scholars agree, however, that this hadith does not prohibit anger categorically, for even the Messenger of God (SAW) became angry when appropriate. Anger is not necessarily a negative emotion in and of itself. Anger can be a positive motivator, and without it, many things would not have been achieved. Anger is something that needs to be trained, not abolished, for it people completely suppressed their sense of anger, many of the injustices of the world would not have been opposed and tyranny would have gone unchecked. Without anger, people would go around with complete impunity and commit heinous acts without resistance from the people. Corruption would cover the face of the earth. Instead of letting your anger control you, you take control of your anger.

With regard to anger, Imam al-Ghazālī says that it is acceptable only at the right time, in the right place, for the right reasons, and with the right intensity. The Messenger of God (SAW) never allowed his anger to get the best of him. He was in control of himself, secure, and always in the state of spiritual certainty. Out of the thousands of reports about the minutest details of the Prophet’s (SAW) life, never has anyone related that the Prophet (SAW) ever did anything that was imprudent or rash.

As for the spiritual disease of anger that consumes a person, Imam Mawlūd says there are two cures. One of them removes anger when it occurs, and the second suppresses or thwarts it. The first cure is to remember the extensive praise and goodness associated with patience and humility. Sīdī Ahmad Zarrūq contends that the main reason people become angry is because they have inflated egos. For example, even though the Quraysh mocked the Prophet (SAW), he did not become angry with them. The ethic promoted here is to simply “let go” and not allow insult to penetrate and manipulate one’s emotion. It is about maintaining control over one’s own emotions. The Prophet (SAW) was the most patient and forgiving of people.

The second cure is how one can control anger by recognizing that nothing takes place without God’s leave: There is no power or might except with God. This life is a crucible of trial, and those are heedless of this react severely when trials come upon them. The Prophet (SAW) said the strong man is not one who can wrestle people, but the man who controls himself when he is angry.

The Prophet (SAW) also advised that if one becomes angry, one should sit down. And if one is sitting, then one should recline (lie down). If neither of these helps, then one should perform the ritual ablution (wudū’) and then pray. The actual act of splashing water on the face can alter a person’s mood. Anger often manifests itself in the face, which becomes red and warm. Once, when a person grew very angry before the Prophet (SAW), he noticed how when one is extremely angry, one’s face resembles Satan’s. The Prophet (SAW) then said, “I have a word that, if spoken, will remove it from him. It is, ‘I seek refuge in God from Satan, the accursed.’”

Anger can be entirely irrational and require nothing more than a change of posture to reconstitute the mind. The Prophet's (SAW) counsel is very telling of human nature; he reveals insights into the ebb and flow of human emotions and the ease with which we can alter our emotional condition.

Qurban 1438H / 2017

Insyallah this will be our 5th year performing the Qurban for our community.

“Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.” - Surah Al Haj, Verse 37

Various Hadiths mentioning the rewards of Qurban:

  • The rewards of the qurban are tremendous. In one hadith, Zaid bin Arqam (R) reports that the companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, asked him: “Ya Rasulallah, what is this sacrifice?” He said: “It is the way of your forefather Ibrahim.”They asked: “What is for us therein?” He replied: “There is a reward for every hair.”They asked: “For the wool, Ya Rasulullah?” He replied: “There is one reward for every strand of wool.” - Ahmad; Ibn Majah

  • While in another hadith, the Prophet, peace be upon him, said “The son of Adam does not do any action on the day of sacrifice (Eid ul Adha) which is more pleasing to Allah than the sacrifice of animals; the animal will come on the Day of Resurrection with its hair, horns and hooves (for reward). The blood certainly reaches Allah before it falls to the ground. So make yourselves purified therewith.” - Tirmidhi; Ibn Majah

This year, you have the choice to do Qurban with us from 7 countries:

“And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” - Al-Baqarah, Verse 195

Mission: To support Mosques and Muslims organisation to provide halal mutton for their Events / Majlis.

Through out the year we have had requests from various organisation for sponsorship of mutton and often we have to reject them because we could only raise funds only during certain periods like Ramadan or when we have Aqiqah Australia projects where we could bring in the mutton from Australia.

To make this effort more sustainable and us to be able to response to requests we decided to run this project all year around.

This would also provide avenues for the community to continue supporting various events through out the year.

Wish to sponsor?

Do share and forward this email to your friends and family! :)

If you happen to be an event organiser or know anyone organising Islamic activities, do submit your events to our portal at www.islamicevents.sg/submit.php
