We received inquiries asking us about whether or not they can cut their hair or clip their nails and which day to make fast. We hope the below article will clarify your answers.
Preparation for Qurban
Bismillah hir Rahmah nir Rahim...
In the name of Allah, the most beneficent, the most merciful.
Qurban is the act of sacrifice that we make to gain Allah’s pleasure in the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim A.S. who was asked to sacrifice his firstborn son, Prophet Ismail. Allah doesn’t need the meat, nor does Allah need the blood of the sacrificed animal. What reaches him is our piety. May Allah be pleased with us and accept our Ibadah.
How to prepare ourselves to ensure our ibadah qurban is accepted?
I would suggest to purify our intention to do this ibadah for the sake of Allah SWT, to follow the sunnah of Rasulullah (ﷺ), and try to increase our good deeds.
Fasting is a form of worship that helps us to be patient and grateful. One of the sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) that he had taught us, is fasting on the day of Arafah (9th Zulhijjah) for those who are not doing the Hajj.
Abu Qatadah Al-Ansari (RAA) narrated, ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about fasting on the day of Arafah (the 9th of the month of Dzhul Hijjah). He replied, "Fasting on the day of Arafah is an expiation (or atonement) for the preceding year and the following year.”
He was also asked about fasting on the day of Ashura (the 10th of the month in Muharram). He replied, “Fasting on the day of Ashura is an expiation for the preceding year.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was also asked about fasting on Monday, and he replied, "This is the day on which I was born and the day on which I was sent (with the Message of Islam) and the day on which I received revelation." Related by Muslim.
This Hadis tells us the reward of fasting on that day. It is not compulsory to fast, but it is a Sunnah for all.
It is also a Sunnah not to cut nails/hair from the start of Zulhijjah until his qurban has been made.
Umm Salama reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said this:
“When any one of you intending to sacrifice the animal enters in the month (of Dhu'l-Hijja) he should not get his hair or nails clipped/cut. Reference: Sahih Muslim.
The wisdom behind this Sunnah is to follow those who are in Ihram.
May Allah Ta’ala accept our efforts and ibadah.
And may Allah be pleased with us. Amiin.
Qurban 1438H / 2017
Insyallah this will be our 5th year performing the Qurban for our community.
“Their meat will not reach Allah , nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.”
Surah Al Haj, Verse 37
