Special Events this week..

RIMA (Centre of Research for Islamic and Malay Affairs), in collaboration with Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP), will be organizing an Islamic seminar on July 17th 2010 (Sat). This year, the theme centers on "Progressive Malay Muslim Community". Thus, we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to this seminar. In the spirit of research and critical academic studies, we hope you could join us and engage the speakers in a passionate dialogue.
Abstract:
The Malay MPs in Singapore had formed the Community Leaders' Forum (CLF) aimed at building A Community of Excellence. This entails helping the Malay/Muslim community in Singapore keep up with the progress towards modernity, while retaining a deep sense of pride in its Malay heritage and culture, and the Islamic faith. The Malay/Muslim community's goal of becoming a community of excellence requires every member of the community to play his/her part. The Community of Excellence is one that is self-reliant, creative, confident and progressive. However, one of the challenges towards achieving a progressive community is the existence of multiple orientations of Islam, along the spectrum of traditionalism on one end, and liberalism on the other. What does it mean to be 'progressive' and how can we achieve a Progressive Muslim Community in a society where there are a multiple orientations of Islam.
